The key measurement is clearance around the island on all working sides. A minimum of 42 inches of clearance is required between the island and any adjacent counter, appliance, or wall. For two-person working clearance, 48 inches is preferred. Most standard GTA kitchen layouts can accommodate a modest island if the kitchen is at least 10 feet wide in the relevant dimension. We assess island feasibility during the design consultation.

In many GTA homes, yes. The key question is whether the wall between the kitchen and the adjacent space is load-bearing. A structural assessment is required before any demolition plan is committed. If the wall is load-bearing, a beam must be engineered and installed, which adds cost but is entirely manageable as part of the renovation. We assess every proposed wall removal as part of the design process.

Quartz is our most frequently recommended countertop material for high-use GTA kitchens. It is non-porous, resists staining and scratching, requires no sealing, and is available in many colours and patterns including natural stone looks. Granite is also a durable choice and heat-resistant. We recommend against marble or marble-look materials for kitchens with heavy daily use because they are more susceptible to staining and etching from acids.

Large-format porcelain tile in warm neutral tones with minimal grout lines is the most popular current choice. Zellige tile and handmade ceramic tile are growing in popularity for the texture and warmth they add. Subway tile remains a strong choice for its versatility. Stone slab backsplash is a premium statement treatment popular in higher-budget kitchen renovations.

Small kitchen optimization starts with cabinet configuration: tall upper cabinets to the ceiling maximize vertical storage; pull-out drawers behind cabinet doors improve accessibility of lower storage; and drawer stacks below the counter provide more accessible storage than cabinet shelves with doors. Integrated organizers inside drawers for cutlery, utensils, and pots maximize usability. A modest island can add significant prep and storage space if clearances allow.

Semi-custom cabinetry offers good quality, a meaningful range of colour and door profile options, and is sized to standard increments that fill most kitchens well when combined with filler panels. It is the right choice for most mid-range GTA kitchen renovations. Full custom cabinetry is designed and built to the exact dimensions of your specific kitchen, allows any configuration, and produces the cleanest result in kitchens with non-standard dimensions, angled walls, or very specific storage requirements.

Semi-custom cabinetry from established manufacturers typically has lead times of 4 to 10 weeks after design finalization and order placement. Full custom cabinetry from specialized shops may have lead times of 8 to 16 weeks. We order cabinetry during the permit approval phase so that cabinet delivery aligns with the construction schedule.
